7/03/2026 – all eTool Default datasets (minor software release v5.39.0)

This minor release features the following update:

  1. Updated Default LCI Material Factors
    Construction Waste and Recycled Content factors for eTool Default LCI materials now align with with RICS WLCA PS 2E assumptions. Existing projects and custom templates are not affected, and [edited] all default public templates have also been updated as of 14/03/2026. More details are available in the support post: Default Construction Waste Factors & Recycled Content in eTool.
11/10/2025 – all datasets V20.2 (minor release)

This minor release features the following updates:

  1. Correction for Aluminium
    Correction made in the Ecoinvent data where aluminium shallow regionalisation was occurring at the wrong level in the supply chain in V20.1 leading to far higher increases from V19 than should be. You’ll see aluminium GWP impacts drop around 6% (AU), 40-55% (UK, NZ & EU) and 15-20% (Global) from V20.1 impacts.
  2. Correction for Copper
    The copper mix in V20.2 has been remodelled to exclude those made directly from scrap across all regions. This removes false regionalisation of copper in low impact grid regions such as UK or Europe which were giving misleadingly low values in v19. You’ll see about 20-30% GWP increase from V20.1 impacts across all regions.
  3. Correction for Plasterboard (AU)
    Corrections made for the AU dataset which had a small error in the underlying AusLCI process with the amortisation of infrastructure which caused virgin plasterboard to have too much increase in impacts compared to V19. GWP impacts for 100% primary gypsum plasterboard has decreased by approximately 47% from V20.1 impacts.
  4. Adjustment for Timber (Unspecified Supply)
    In V20.1, there was no impact differentiation between ‘Unspecified Supply’ and ‘Sustainably Sourced’ timbers where the full benefit of carbon sequestration (biogenic carbon) have been accounted for as per the EcoInvent/AusLCI data. In V20.2, carbon sequestration benefits (GWP-biogenic) have not been applied for unspecified supplies of timber to represent worse case scenario of the timber being sourced from old-growth/non-responsibly managed forests which are considered ‘non-renewable’.
  5. Correction for MEM indicators
    MEM indicator impacts for several recyclable materials and the disposal of a few end-of-life methods were incorrect which was causing the MEM results to be wrongly calculated. These have been reviewed and updated for metals, glass & plastics materials.
25/09/2025 – All Datasets V20.1
  1. Correction to default densities for 0%, 5% and 20% RAP asphalt hot mixes
    These three materials had 2000 as the default density which was causing the impacts to be inconsistent with the other mixes. The default density has been updated from 2000 to 2300. This update will only affect new designs created from here on. Existing certified designs won’t be affected. To update existing uncertified designs with the new density, you will need to manually edit the material density in your design (Updated 30/10/2025: Existing asphalt templates in the library containing these materials have been updated to the new density! However, if you notice any public templates that we may have missed, please raise a support request so that we can get it updated for you.)
31/05/2025 – All Datasets V20.1 (minor release)
  1. Correction to Refrigerant leakage GWP values
    Refrigerant leakage GWP values have been updated to reflect the latest IPCC AR6 guidelines, replacing the previous AR5 values.
25/01/2025 – All Datasets V20.0
  1. Correction to Mass Indicators
    Mass indicators have been corrected to ensure that Total Mass indicator is now equal to Mv + Mrec + Mren + Mrenrec + Mreu + Mrenreu. Material Efficiency has been recalculated based on Mv + 0.7*Mrec + 0.35Mren + 0.245Mrenrec + 0.1Mreu + 0.35Mrenreu.
    Where:

    • Mv = Mass of non-renewable primary material (t)
    • Mrec = Mass of non-renewable secondary (recycled) materials (t)
    • Mren = Mass of renewable primary material (t)
    • Mrenrec = Mass of renewable secondary (recycled) material (t)
    • Mreu = Mass of reused non-renewable materials (t)
    • Mrenreu = Mass of reused renewable materials (t)
  2. Correction to 1 Cement: 4 Sand
    1 Cement: 4 Sand was incorrectly being categorised as 1 Lime: 3 Sand binder, resulting in incorrect results. The previous mapping in version 19 resulted in a higher impact due to an incorrect cement ratio. The new mapping in version 20 accurately reflects the lower cement ratio, resulting in a lower impact for 1 Cement: 4 Sand compared to lime mortar (1 Lime: 3 Sand).
5/11/2024 – United Kingdom LCI – V20.0
  1. Correction to GWP Polarity
    New dataset was incorrectly reporting GWP-T, GWP-F, GWP-B and GWP-LULUC as positive numbers instead of negative numbers as required by our algorithms.
2/11/2024 – All Datasets V20.0
  1. Correction to Global Warming Potential – Biogenic
    An outdated characterisation methodology had been used to calculate GWP-B, resulting in a misalignment with GWP-T. GWP-B has been corrected to ensure that GWP-T is now equal to GWP-F + GWP-B + GWP-LULUC, as expected.

  2. Correction to intensity of closed-loop recycling data
    Corrections were made to the intensity values for closed-loop recycling of specific materials where the data was previously incomplete. This adjustment affected all database materials with closed-loop recycling in eTool, bringing more accurate results and improving the overall reliability of the impact data. As a result, a slight decrease in impacts for A1-A3 was anticipated, which aligns with the changes observed in your design.

  3. Added new material
    Bentonite has been added to the database.

20/07/2024 – All Datasets V20.0
  1. New Version of ecoinvent Dataset
    All v20 Datasets are now based on ecoinvent v3.10. This represents a jump in the base data from eTool V19, which was based on ecoinvent v3.3. As we can’t identify all changes in this data, please see the release information for ecoinvent versions below.
  2. Improved Regionalisation
    Regionalisation has been refined to better account for globalisation of markets.  This will be undertaken for the top level processes which contribute a majority of the impact (eg. cement is regionalized in concrete, ethylene is regionalised in polyethylene). Up stream from this point the regionalisation in the ecoinvent supply processes but default back global averages where regional processes are unavailable.
    This includes changes to:

    • Grids
    • Natural gas and oil inputs
    • Water extractions and releases into the environment.
  3. Compliant with EF3.0
    V20 Dataset is compliance to data and methods outlined in the Environmental Footprint database v3.0

  4. New disposal options for incineration of petroleum/hydrocarbon-based materials.
  5. Improved consistency within product categories

  6. Updates to some fuels and energy sources

  7. Impact Increases
    • Increase in Diesel Impacts from v19
      Scope 3 emissions for diesel have increased substantially (approx. double) from the previous version of the ecoinvent dataset. This comes from more accurate accounting of fugitive emissions for crude oil production. Results of this change will be apparent in:

    • Increase in GWP-B and GWP-LULUC
      GWP-B and GWP-LULUC characterisation models have been improved, resulting in moderate increases in GWP-B and more significant increases in GWP-LULUC.
    • Increase to Net Use of Freshwater (FW)
      Net use of FW has increased by about 10x for materials due to improved characterisation models.
    • Increase to Abiotic Depletion Potential – Elements (ADPE) for plastics and metals
      ADPE for plastics and metals has increased, impacting GS Buildings calculations.
    • NEW! Increases in Window Assembly Impacts (note added 21/08/2025)
      More accurate window assembly impact calculations have been used, resulting in significant increases for aluminium, hybrid and PVC framed windows across all regions. Please refer to this support post for the assumptions used for window calculations – Window Assumptions V20
    • NEW! Increases in Some Steel Products (note added 21/08/2025)

      For UK steel, in V19 models for 89% virgin low alloyed steel (pipe and hot extrusion) were linked to the wrong steel manufacturing technology (mix included electric arc furnace), which lead to large increases in V20 when they are correctly linked to a basic oxygen furnace processes.

    • NEW! Increases in Aluminium (note added 21/08/2025)
      For UK & EU, V19 had assumed alumina (the precursor to aluminium) as being produced in the same region as the aluminium – giving a lower total GHG value. In V20, alumina is coming from the world market, which is dominated by China, Middle East etc which is more accurate (and higher impact) local alumina production in regions such as the UK is non-existent and in EU is insufficient to cover overall aluminium production. For NZ, V19 assumed that 100% of electricity used in aluminium production was sourced from hydro power, which gave an extremely low footprint. This assumption had no auditable evidence supporting it, therefore in V20, the electricity allocation for NZ aluminium production was updated to the average NZ grid which aligns more with LCA best practices until better support evidence can be produced.

  8. Impact Decreases
    • Decrease in Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP)
      Significant decreases in ODP for materials and disposals generally.
    • NEW! Decrease in Some Steel Products (note added 21/08/2025)
      For Australian steel processes, some reductions have occurred such as hot impact extrusion (steel, hot extrusion and steel accessories) which require significant electricity inputs, due to lower grid impacts. 
    • NEW! Decrease in Plasterboard Impacts (note added 21/08/2025)
      There was an error in the regionalisation switch leading to double counting of multiple regions’ impacts in the one process, which was affecting all regions. In V19, heat used in manufacturing plasterboard was listed as a mix of almost entirely coal. In V20 based on European regionalisation, the mix is actually 2.5% biomass, 2.55% heat from fuel oil and the remainder is heat from municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration. The net effect is about a 10 fold reduction in impact for this heat. In future, for regions with less waste to energy, this model might need refining, however shifting from coal to natural gas has led to this significant improvement.

Key Changes:

  • Version 3.7.1 Correction: A critical error was found in version 3.7 regarding the “iron sinter production” dataset, specifically in the estimated emissions for dioxins and particulate matter. Version 3.7.1 was released to correct this error.
  • Iron Sinter Production Correction: The emissions of “Particulates, > 10 um,” “Particulates, > 2.5 um, and < 10um,” and “Dioxins, measured as 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin” were corrected in the “iron sinter production” activities for RER and GLO. Additionally, emissions for “Particulates, < 2.5 um” were added.
  • Zinc Mine Operation Update: In the “zinc mine operation, GLO” activity, the exchange amount of “Gold, in ground” was changed based on updated data from the International Zinc Association.
  • Ammonium Paratungstate Production Update: The uncertainty distribution in all exchanges was changed from “uniform” to “lognormal” for the “ammonium paratungstate production, solvent extraction” activity.
  • Consequences in Results: The report analyzes the differences in LCA results between versions 3.7 and 3.7.1. It notes changes in human toxicity, ecotoxicity, and mineral resource categories, while other categories like climate change and water depletion remained largely unaffected. Changes were analyzed for different system models: “allocation, cut-off by classification,” “allocation at the point of substitution,” and “substitution, consequential, long-term.”
  • Summary of Updates & Additions in v3.7: Version 3.7 included the addition of 900 new datasets and the update of 1,000 datasets, including over 100 new products. This expanded the database’s coverage in sectors like metals, fertilizers, forestry and wood, packaging materials, waste/recycling, and biogas supply chains. Electricity market mixes were also updated.
  • Database-Wide Changes: Several activities and exchanges were renamed for clarity. Changes were made affecting attributional and consequential system models. Impact assessment methods were also updated, with some methods being renamed to indicate they are “superseded.” Non-fossil carbon balancing was addressed, especially for the wood and paper sector.
  • Sector-Specific Updates: The report details updates and additions in various sectors, including building and construction materials, energy, fertilizers, metals, paper & pulp, waste management & recycling, and wood.

    • The update of the metals sector drives most of the changes in LCA scores, especially for metal depletion indicators.
    • Changes in ammonia and urea, along with nitric acid, have a significant impact.
    • Updated electricity market mixes, along with changes in copper and rare earth scores, and correction in uranium enrichment technology shares, bring changes to the electricity sector.
    • Update of biomethane supply chains has significantly modified the scores associated with this commodity.
    • Improvement of regional coverage of wood markets led to some changes in scores, mainly due to transport considerations.
  • Database-Wide Changes:
    • Renamed activities and exchanges for clarity.
    • Changes affecting attributional and consequential system models.
    • Updates to impact assessment methods, including renaming some methods as “superseded.”

Key Changes:

  • Sustainable Recycling Industries: This version has seen significant contributions by the SRI (Sustainable Recycling Industries) programme.
  • Database-Wide Changes:
    • Renamed Activities and Exchanges: A number of activities and products were renamed for better clarity and to better define their scope.
    • Metal Elementary Exchanges: The naming convention for elementary exchanges representing metal extraction was revised for consistency.
    • Changes in Geography: Brazil was split into its 27 states and 5 electricity grids, affecting both the Electricity sectors.
    • Changes Affecting Allocation System Models: Modifications were made to the classification and allocation of products in attributional system models. Some products were reclassified from MFT (Multi-Functional Treatment) to non-MFT for the APOS (Allocation at the Point of Substitution) system model. Corrections were made to the use of “true value allocation” (e.g., exergy for electricity and heat allocation).
    • Changes Affecting the Consequential System Model: A few activities had their Technology Levels changed, impacting their behavior in the consequential system model.
    • Impact Assessment Methods: Several impact assessment methods were marked as “obsolete.” Naming conventions for resources elementary exchanges were updated. New and updated elementary exchanges were included, with corresponding Characterization Factors (CFs) added.
  • Sector-Specific Changes:
    • Building and Construction Materials: Updates were made to data on sand and gravel, clinker, cement, concrete, and other materials.
    • Chemicals: Updates were made to data on plastics and steam.
    • Electricity: New data for Latin American electricity was added. Updates were made to electricity market mixes in attributional system models. Other changes included updates to power plant infrastructure inputs and geothermal/concentrating solar power supply chains.
    • Metals: Significant updates were made to data on aluminum, copper, gold, silver, iron, steel, platinum group metals, tin, titania, zinc, cadmium, cobalt, and slags/tailings.
    • Petroleum Refining and Petroleum Products: The modeling of petroleum refining and products was revised, including geographical coverage and consequential modeling.
    • Transport: Changes were made to transport associated to certain activities (see page 150)
    • Waste Sector: New waste treatments for domestic composting were added. Practices for secondary metals recovery and e-waste plastic recycling were represented.
    • Water Supply: Updates were made to irrigation, tap water, process water, and rainwater harvesting data.

Key Changes:

  • Database-Wide Changes:
    • Renamed Exchanges and Activities: Several activities and products were renamed to improve clarity and better define their scope. Examples include renaming “green bell pepper” to “bell pepper” and “epoxy resin” to “epoxy resin, liquid”.
    • Changes in Geography: The geographical location of some activities was changed. For example, some aluminium production activities were changed from CA-QC and IAI Area, North America, without Quebec to RNA (Northern America).
    • Changes in Classification: Changes were made to the classification of products for attributional system models, specifically regarding allocation cut-off (recyclable, waste, allocatable) and allocation at the point of substitution (APOS) (MFT or non-MFT).
    • Changes in Price: Prices were adjusted for several products, which can affect results when economic allocation is used. Examples include changes in the prices of apples, bell peppers, and lithium carbonate.
    • Impact Assessment Methods:
      • Corrections were made to characterization factors (CFs) in several impact assessment methods, including Impact2002+, Ecological scarcity 2013, ReCiPe (legacy implementation), and IPCC 2013.
      • New methods were added, including the updated package of recommended methods from the European Joint Research Centre (JRC) (ILCD version 2.0) and the latest ReCiPe version (1.13).
  • Sector-Specific Changes:
    • Aluminium Supply Chains: The entire aluminium supply chain was updated using data from the International Aluminium Institute (IAI) for the reference year 2015. Geographical resolution was improved or edited in some cases.
    • Chemical Sector:
      • New and updated markets were added, including regional markets for many chemical products. Transport distances for these regional markets were calculated based on Eurostat data.
      • Several transforming activities were updated, with adjustments to production volumes, specific links to regional suppliers, and corrections to exchange amounts.
    • Electricity:
      • New data on electricity production in South Africa was added.
      • Updates and corrections were made to market mixes.
      • Changes were made to the modeling of electricity voltage transformation activities.
    • Hard Coal Supply Chains:
      • Changes were made to the modeling of mining and preparation of hard coal, including uncontrolled coal fires and fugitive methane emissions.
      • New and updated datasets were added, including market and import datasets.
    • Pulp and Containerboard Update:
      • Updates were made to pulp and containerboard data.
    • Transport Sector:
      • Updates were made to road freight transport, rail freight transport, and inland waterways freight transport.
    • Waste Sector:
      • New municipal waste treatments and market mixes were added.
      • Other updates included waste paperboard re-modeling, renaming of zinc residue from incineration, new Swiss markets, corrections to activities, and deletion of activities.
    • Updates in Remaining Sectors:
      • Updates were made to infrastructure & service supply chains, agriculture and forestry sectors, building and construction, fuel production and supply, and machinery-related sectors.

  • Introduction: Even seemingly minor changes, like altering an activity link, can potentially influence impact assessment results.
  • Database-wide changes:
    • Renamed exchanges and activities: Some activities and products were renamed for clarity or to prepare for future updates (e.g., “copper concentrate” to “copper concentrate, sulfide ore”).
    • Price changes: Prices were updated for several products (e.g., acetone, compost, hydrogen, lime).
    • Changes on Impact Assessment: Corrections were made to a few mistakes in the implementation of impact assessment methods from version 3.3. No new methods were added.
  • Electricity:
    • Market mixes: Updated and new market mixes for electricity (high, medium, and low voltage) based on the latest statistical data. Attributional system models are based on 2014 production volumes, and consequential system models have new specific electricity market compositions for 40 countries.
    • New and updated activities: Many new activities were added or updated for electricity and heat production to cover 142 countries and represent marginal suppliers in consequential modeling.
    • New data on India: India’s electricity production is now modeled per state, grouped into five sub-national grids.
  • Chemical products:
    • Significant extension of coverage, including reviews, updates, and new datasets.
    • ISIC codes of updated activities were reviewed and changed where necessary.
    • New chemical products were added, and their corresponding markets were created.
    • Existing chemical products were reviewed and updated, with changes to exchange amounts, production volumes, prices, and documentation.
    • Steam production datasets in the chemical industry were harmonized.
  • European natural gas supply chains:
    • Updated data for natural gas production in Norway, Russia, the Netherlands, and LNG production in Algeria.
    • Improved data for losses and emissions related to flaring, venting, and fugitive emissions.
    • Recovery of elemental sulfur from the sweetening process was introduced as a byproduct.
  • Other sectors: Updates were made in plastics and synthetic rubber, recycling of post-consumer PE and PET packaging material, agriculture, building and refractory materials, metals, transport, waste treatment of organic waste, and wood and wood products.

In preparation for V7.3, the default material factors for BRE IMPACT datasets have been updated to align with BRE IMPACT V7.3 assumptions:

  • default densities
  • default material service life
  • default disposal methods

Only new material elements added to Designs or Templates will be affected. All existing templates and projects are unaffected. All existing public BRE IMPACT templates have also had ‘[BRE IMPACT Legacy]’ appended to the template names to denote templates using the old factors.
